Pharmacology and Toxicology can provide quantitative analysis for drug metabolism studies, including the identification of metabolites for many drugs. Biological lipids both neutral lipids and phospholipids can be measured and we have some experience in measuring steroid hormones. We can determine the molecular weight of peptides and proteins up to a molecular weight of about 100,000 daltons, and if a suitable standard is available the concentration of lower molecular weight peptides can be measured. However, it is not intended that the identification of novel or minor metabolites will be included in routine analysis.

The instruments are dated thus we are not able to offer the sensitivity that is currently attainable, but we do have the necessary instrumentation and experience to provide the analytical requirements for many pharmokinetic studies and measuring the molecular weight of isolated or partially isolated peptides and proteins. We do not have the software or instrumentation for full scale proteomic analysis.
Arrangements for handling samples will be decided on for each individual analysis. We can provide assistance in the extraction and derivatization of analytes, and in some cases we can be responsible for sample preparation. See fees

The department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has a number of instruments, which could be used to support UMC investigators. The proposed fees are intended to cover the cost of expendable supplies and contribute to the maintenance of the instruments. Any plans to use the services should be discussed with us in regards to our ability to make the measurements needed, and if instrumentation is available for the particular application.
