Eleven Selected for MSRP Program; Deadline for MSRP Summer Student Research Fellowship - February 11

Eleven students were chosen for the Medical Student Research Program (MSRP). These students will work on a research study with their mentor throughout the remainder of their medical school education. Students receive a $5,000 grant to be used towards research materials and supplies along with travel to attend a national meeting. Applications for the MSRP Summer Student Research Fellowship are due February 11. The Summer MSRP option is a 10-week paid research experience between the M1 and M2 years. Intramural Research Program Applications Due March 1
The Intramural Research Support Program (IRSP) provides support to UMMC faculty to pursue a research project or provide bridge funding. Up to $30,000 may be requested over a 12-month project period. Completed applications are due to the Office of Research by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013. Please note that protocols must be submitted to the respective review committees (e.g. IRB, IACUC, IBC and Radiation Safety) by the application deadline; applicants who have not submitted protocols by this time will not be considered for funding. Proposals selected for award will be allowed no more than 30 days after the anticipated award date to obtain assurance approvals. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
IACUC Announces Updates to Policies and New Forms
- The Animal Activity Protocol Form has been revised to facilitate completion by PIs and review by committee members, as well as incorporate new recommendations in the 8th Edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The revised form and appendices are available on the IACUC website.
- A new appendix has been added to the Appendices list: Appendix M - Non-Pharmaceutical-Grade Compounds. This appendix is designed to capture the information required to meet the recommendation in the 8th Edition of the Guide.
- A new Policy Statement on the Use on Non-Pharmaceutical-Grade Chemicals/Compounds in Laboratory Animals was approved January 15, 2013 that provides additional information about the use of non-pharmaceutical-grade chemicals/compunds in general and specifically notes a few commonly used in animal research.
- A Change of Principal Investigator form has been added to the forms index.
- The Annual Continuing Review Form was revised to include a Final Report component to capture data from studies at completion of a third year of activities or at the closure of a study.
- Another policy added to meet the recommendations in the 8th Edition of the Guide is The Policy Statement for Social Housing on Nonhuman Primates, effective December 18, 2012.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Human Research Office Hosting Informational Sessions
The Human Research Office is hosting informational sesssions on the Institutional Review Board submission process. Topics will vary weekly and include utilizing IDEATE for all level users, guidance in completing applications and Q&A with HRO staff and IRB members. All staff and faculty conducting or planning to conduct research studies are encouraged to attend. Sessions begin on January 24th in S123 from 3-4pm and will be offered every Thursday until February 28th.
